This race could not happen without the generous support of the volunteers. The race requires a variety of skills and commitments from numerous dedicated volunteers in order to take place. Positions range from clerical pre-race, week-of gear check support to on course positions, and the finish area. The positions on course require avalanche training and volunteers must have their own beacon, shovel and probe. They must be on skis (no motorized vehicles) and be able to transport themselves in/out of the back country unassisted. Medical training or EMT qualifications are preferred.
Volunteers at gear check on Thursday and Friday can sign up for full day or half day positions to help racers go through the check-in/gear check process. The race has a movie night on Thursday and on-snow demo on Friday which also need a few volunteers. Those interested in working Friday night at the start will help with loading racer bags, hanging/taking down banners, assisting in SPOT distribution, beacon checks and final gear checks. Volunteers available to get themselves to Aspen are needed at the Finish area all day Saturday and the awards party Saturday evening.
Clerical work and pre-race organization happen the weeks leading up to the race. Some needs are in Crested Butte and Aspen, others can be done at home on ones own computer.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email info@elkmountainstraverse.com and put ‘volunteer’ in the subject line. In the body of the email please list the locations you are interested in helping at and if pertinent, your qualifications.
Interested individuals are also encouraged to join the email list in the space at the bottom of the page. Be sure to follow the race on Twitter and Facebook, links are provided below.
